Prince

from Dirty Mind (1980)
from Controversy (1981)

Interesting Demo Recording

I Feel For You (acoustic demo)

from 1999 (1982)
from Purple Rain (1984)

This rare recording provides an opportunity to see when "Purple Rain" was debuted at First Avenue, a favored club in Minneapolis. It also introduces Prince's recently appointed new guitar player, Wendy Melvoin. This was before the album (or movie) had been released.

Check out this video of Prince playing "My Guitar Gently Weeps" (by the Beatles) at the 2004 inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (it was the year George Harrison was inducted as a solo artist). Also playing on this track are Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne (Electric Light Orchestra), Steve Winwood, and Dhani Harrison (George Harrison's son). Prince was such a phenomenal composer, vocalist, and producer that he rarely got the attention he deserved as a guitar player ... which, I believe, is born out without a doubt in this video; guitar solo begins at 3:28 in the recording. That doesn't necessarily justify Prince's disappearance from stage as the audience applauds. By the way, check out what happens at the very end (6:12) ... where did the guitar go. Prince: ever the showman!! For anyone interested, there is a revised/enhanced version posted by Joel Gallen, director/producer of the original Hall of Fame broadcast, which shows the ending better (the disappearing guitar, as well as Prince's disappearance from stage).
