—we oversimplify when we speak of "society" in the singular
Black culture:
  - 	racial segregation was the norm ... even after Brown v. Board of 
    Education, 1954 (especially in the South & Southwest) 
    
      - separate housing districts and schools
 
- 	had its own distinct characteristics (speech, dance, religion, dress, 
    & music) 
    
      - Gospel and Rhythm & Blues
- 		"race" records
   
Poorer whites of the South, Midwest, & Southwest
  - 	"country & western" (C&W) 
    
      - hillbilly music, bluegrass or western swing
 
 upper & middle class whites were listening primarily to Pop Music 
Changes in Lives of Teenagers (WWII)
  - 	integrated back into the workforce
- 	received education concurrently
- 	taken seriously as people
- 	prosperity of war years resulted in the availability of expendible $$$$ 
    
      - 		cars for social life
- 		parties as entertainment
- 		teenage market created
